Crafts Toys

Do you know of any crafts that will appeal to men?

I am in charge of an ongoing service project at my college called the Service Buffet where a person can sit at the bar and so a service project for a couple minuites. Most of my service projects seem to be crafts and I don't feel like I'm getting many men for obvious reasons. For example, this month we are making puppets to send to kids on Africa. I put out the pattern, the felt, the thread, needles, and sissors, and instructions, and then I let the random people come by and make a puppet in their spare time. But I have a few restrictions. I don't have much of a budget, the supplies, whatever they are, need to be stuff that people won't want to walk away with, and the craft needs to be fairly simple. I would love any suggestions.

  1. Maybe if you tried a craft that involved using tools/building stuff. This will cater to many men, though by no means all. Try something like wood carving.
  2. Wood carving or carpentry <how about simple marionettes>
  3. what about stringed puupets
  4. For starters I'd have a paper lying there where the guys could write suggestions for future projects. Empty tin cans; attach paper, or fabric, or pieces of masking tape (use brown shoe polish on the mask.tape ones). They become pen holders. Cut up old blue jeans to make small purses, or note and pen holder (use magnet on the back), or cloth covered journals. Some men enjoy knitting. Wood burning. Decorating empty shoe boxes and fill with cheap items to give at Christmas.
  5. wooden airplane kits are cheap or wind chimes made with beer bottle caps
  6. Give corrugated cardboard a chance. . Make a couple of patterns to make cars, wagons, trains and more. By gluing the boards together and cutting them like wood you can make wonderful things, some times you don't even need paint.. Have the guys make patterns you will be surprised the talent you have around.
